DEGRP researchers win Outstanding Business and Enterprise Impact

Outstanding Business and Enterprise Impact category in ESRC’s 2020 Celebrating Impact Prize 2020

November 16, 2020

The Evidence and Policy Group are thrilled by the announcement that DEGRP researchers Professor Arjan Verschoor and Professor Ben d’Exelle of the University of East Anglia have won the Outstanding Business and Enterprise Impact category in ESRC’s 2020 Celebrating Impact Prize 2020.

The researchers are recognised for their work on insuring previously ‘uninsurable’ farmers in Uganda, which began under a DEGRP-funded grant on agricultural investment in Uganda, lasting from 2012 to 2015. Together with field research manager Joshua Balungira and research officer Borja Perez-Viana, the team’s work led the Government of Uganda to change its agricultural sector strategy and, in 2016, establish the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS) providing subsidised insurance together with other products, such as good quality seed, and services – including loans – to promote agricultural investment.

The UAIS now protects more than 225,000 smallholder farmers against the risks to their livelihoods posed by drought, pests and poor quality seed, and boosts productivity by providing them with the confidence to invest in their farms. This short film produced by ESRC highlights the impact of the team’s work.

The Evidence and Policy Group sends warm congratulations to the research team. You can find out more about the lessons gleaned from their DEGRP project here, as well their approach to stakeholder engagement here.
